Recovery of shark

  • Organization: Cayume

  • Funding: €13,375

  • Year: 2020

  • Region: Majorca

The Cayume Association is a non-profit organization that works for the study and conservation of the Balearic Sea. In 2020 it starts its activity with the Eggcase2020 project with the aim of recovering shark and ray eggs from accidental fishing (bycatch). The eggs will be incubated in order to return the hatchlings to the natural environment, thus contributing to improving the status of the populations of sharks and rays that inhabit the Balearic Sea.

The Eggcase2020 project counts with the support of the Government of the Balearic Islands who will provide the facilities of the Marine Research and Aquaculture Laboratory (LIMIA) in which the eggs will be incubated; and the collaboration of Fishermen of Port Andratx who will help recover the "lost" eggs of shark and rays. This is a pilot project with potential to be replicated beyond the Balearic Islands and which fits within the Balearics shark and ray conservation plan.
